A Life in Art

Sughra Baghirzada

Born 10 February 1947, Baku, Azerbaijan

Sughra Baghirzada is one of Azerbaijan's most cherished creative figures — an actress whose career spans six decades, a visual artist, and a florist of international renown. Her life is a testament to the belief that art, in all its forms, is the truest language of the human spirit.

1947 – 1959

A Childhood Shaped by Song

Sughra was born on 10 February 1947 in Baku, the capital of Soviet Azerbaijan — a city of ancient walls, Caspian winds, and a rich tradition of music and poetry. From her earliest years, she showed an extraordinary gift for performance. At just twelve years old, she was invited to perform at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where her rendition of the folk song 'Jujalarim' captivated audiences and was later preserved in the prestigious collection 'The Best Children's Voices of the World.' It was a beginning that announced a remarkable life to come.

The World of Cinema

Sughra's screen debut came in 1963 with the Azerbaijanfilm production 'Ulduz', in which she played the beloved role of Yeter. The film became a classic of Azerbaijani cinema, and her performance established her as a natural talent of rare warmth and depth. Over the following decades she appeared in numerous films and television productions — including 'A Man Is Born' (1974), 'The Lion Left Home' (1977), 'Dream' (2001), and 'Swing over the Caspian' (2019, directed by G. Askerov) — bringing to each role the same quiet intelligence and emotional honesty that had defined her since childhood. Her most recent work was completed in 2023, a testament to a creative energy that has never dimmed.

1970s – 1980s

Engineer and Artist

Beyond the screen, Sughra pursued a parallel life of intellectual rigour. She trained and worked as an engineer — a discipline that sharpened her eye for structure, proportion, and the hidden geometry of beautiful things. This dual identity, as both a technical mind and a creative spirit, would come to define the precision and artistry of her later work in floristry and the visual arts.

2004 – Present

The Language of Flowers

In 2004, Sughra Baghirzada became a member of the World Flower Council — the first and only representative of the Turkic-speaking world to hold this distinction. Her floral compositions, of which she has created more than 200, have been exhibited in Latvia, Russia, France, Malaysia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Croatia, Japan, and China. Each arrangement is conceived as a work of art: a meditation on colour, form, and the fleeting beauty of living things. She is also a member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, and her paintings carry the same warmth and contemplative depth as her floral work.

2008 – 2021

Honours and Recognition

In 2008, by Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sughra Baghirzada was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Azerbaijan — the nation's highest recognition for cultural achievement. In 2018, she received the Taraggi (Progress) Medal by Order of the President. In 2021, the United Nations Council on Public Awards presented her with the Leonardo da Vinci Medal for outstanding contributions to world culture. These honours reflect not only a distinguished career, but a life lived in devoted service to beauty and the arts.

"Art is not what I do — it is what I am."
